Wine Of Hungary

Hungary is a country in Central Europe that managed to gain a reputation in the wine world with just a few iconic wines. However, the wine heritage of Hungary encompasses a surprising variety of styles.

In addition to the famous sweet wines of Tokaji and Bull’s Blood of Eger, the Hungarian wine Arsenal is a dry white from Somlo (Somló), Nesma (Neszmély), and from the shores of lake Balaton and Reds from villány (Villány), Sopron (Sopron) and Sexana (Szekszárd).

The wine history of Hungary, as usual, goes back to the Roman period, from the time where she had to survive numerous political, religious and economic woes, including Islamic rule in the 16th century, when alcohol was banned, and then the phylloxera epidemic of the late 19th century.

Regions and climate of Hungary

Modern Hungary’s wine regions scattered across the country. From the centre of Sopron in the North-West to Tokay in the North-East 370 km away and Hajós-Baja (Hajós-Baja) in the South, some 250 km away.
Between these three key areas are 22 official wine region of Hungary, each with its own characteristic blend of history, terroir and styles of wine.

For example, focused on the amount of wine southern plains differ markedly from lacustrine samples from the West and representatives from the foothills of the North-Eastern hills.

The Eastern part of Hungary surrounded by the Carpathian mountains that protect it from cold winds from Poland and Western Ukraine. This is a significant factor in the formation of local climate.

In the whole country the climate is continental, tempered by the water of lakes Balaton and Fertő, creating the conditions for a soft and long period of maturation of the grapes.

Grapes

Most significant for local wine grapes are presented with a mix of local and international varieties of French origin which are better studied and easier sold.

The traditional Hungarian white variety is a star Tokaj Furmint (Furmint) and Harslevelu (Hárslevelű) and olaszrizling (it has a, aka Welschriesling in Austria), leanka (Leányka) and kennely (Types).

To him lately has been added a lot of new hybrids like Irsha Oliver (Irsai Olivér), Cersei of futures (Cserszegi Fűszeres), marshmallows (Zefir) and Zenith (Zenit), some of which were created directly by the Hungarian ampelography. Plus the rosy-cheeked Zinfandel (Cirfandli), he’s Austrian Zierfandler, a well-known fact that by mistake once gave the name to the variety Zinfandel.
