In Central Italy originated and flourished a unique phenomenon – the supertuscan wines. Italian legislation requires the production of wine shall meet the requirements in the region (yield, observance of technology of production, varietal composition, etc.). If produced, the wine does not meet these requirements, it is disqualified from the local or table wine.

But forty years ago, a new generation of winemakers, which in the first place was a burning desire to unlock the potential of Tuscany. They decided to put their reputation at risk and show the world the full depth of Tuscan wines. These winemakers have been studying the local grapes, as well as the behavior of the Tuscan earth, the international varieties. And then there was wine created from unusual for a Tuscan grape varieties. We also used new techniques and technologies.

All innovative tricks led to the fact that there is absolutely another direction in winemaking. Wine introduced by Italian law could not claim the status of a DOC. However, at the international tasting wine received top marks and rave reviews. With a light hand of American specialists emerging class of wines became known as super Tuscan.

So, supertuscan wine is a wine of the highest quality and flavour, produced with violation of requirements of the wine law.

Supertuscan wine marked the beginning of the era of the “revival” of Italian winemaking. The first product from a class does it mean super Tuscans appeared in the world market in 1968.

In fact, the first of the new wines appeared much earlier, but was made only for home use. Great wine Sassicaia (Sassicaia) was only one of the first. It was followed by Masseto (Masseto), Vigorello, Ornellaia, Tassinaia is only a few wines are included in the class supertuscan. Over time, the decrees of the government, some of the wine received DOC status.

The upward trend in quality, which originated in Tuscany, gradually spread over all Italy. Now a similar phenomenon can be found in other regions.
The uniqueness of supertuscan, primarily in the fact that under the influence of the market in a relatively short time the legislation was revised.

Unfortunately, the market dictates the conditions. In Central Italy, and not only there, there was wine, made for the sake of ratings. There is a pattern – as soon as the wine enters at the top of “hit parade”, it immediately rises in price. Thus, if the winemaker wants to set a price that would allow him to profit from the production of wine, it must focus on the preferences of the tasting commissions and agencies for ratings. All this leads to the average taste of the wine, both in Italy and around the world.

To resist this process can only well-known winemakers or those for whom wine is not a main income. Only these producers can rely on your own taste. As you know, the classification does not always determine the taste of wine, it only guarantees a certain quality. So if you want to choose a bottle of Italian wine in the store or in a restaurant, then focus on the price of the bottle, the name of the winemaker, and of course, the advice of a specialist.
