Bordeaux Supérieur

The wine Bordeaux supérieur (Bordeaux supérieur), as the name suggests, is a kind of “super” version of the ordinary wines of Bordeaux (Bordeaux AOC)

Inclusion in this category available white and red wines from across Bordeaux, stretching for 130 km from Sainte-Foy in the East to the North-West region of the Medoc.

Grapes

Superior wine made from classic Bordeaux grape varieties. Red for the most part based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet franc, with small additions of Malbec and Petit Verdot. In rare cases, its place in the blend may take a long time forgotten in Bordeaux Carmenere, but it is grown here now only a few vineyards.

The white “superior” is produced mainly from Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, with modest additions of Muscadelle and Sauvignon Gris.
In France, only two introduced the appellation for their wines category superior: Bordeaux and Beaujolais.

In the Bordeaux sub-appellation Graves (Graves) have your wine Graves Superieures, but it can be exceptionally sweet white wine, not any super-good white wines of Graves.

The concept of super-wine is very common in Italy, where many categories have a subclass of DOC superiore (e.g. Prosecco Superiore)

There are several points that make the wine Bordeaux supérieur special. The most obvious is their great richness and complexity compared to the base wines of Bordeaux. This difference is due to special requirements for their production.

The key difference is manifested in the vineyard: planting density here is required by law to be higher. The more vines, the harder they have to try to survive, the deeper goes the root of the vine, the stronger she is.

The vineyards supérieur wines must have 4500 vines per hectare and not less than 2.2 m between the rows. The vineyards, standard wines of Bordeaux are required to have only 4,000 vines per hectare and more free 2.5 m between rows. But such requirements seem very relaxed when compared, for example, with the Sauternes, where each ha shall be at least 6,500 vines.

The maximum yield per hectare for the wines superior is also 10% lower: 9 tons for red and 8 tonnes for white. And the grapes should be a little more Mature by the time of collection and contain 0.5% potential alcohol more than berries for ordinary Bordeaux wines.

About a quarter of the vineyards are reserved for Bordeaux supérieur. They are scattered throughout the region, but offset in the direction of the territories to the North of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol.
