Aligote is most famous as one of the three main varieties of Burgundy, a “poor cousin” of the more prestigious and more lucrative Chardonnay . DNA profiling has shown its kinship with the family of Pinot.
Synonyms varieties: Plan Gris (Gris Plant), Blanc de Troyes, Vert Blanc, Gris Chaudenet, Giboudot Blanc, Griset Blanc.
Best of all it manifests itself in the appellation Bourgogne aligoté, especially in Butanone (Bouzeron) in Northern côte Shalonez. And also plays a key role in sparkling wines Crémant de Bourgogne.
Aliquot contributes to the wine of Burgundy for over 200 years, accompanying the planting of Chardonnay . He eventually found his place on less popular stations on the plateau and in the valleys, away from the expensive lands reserved for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay .
Aliquot – early maturing, and more resistant to frost than his aristocratic counterparts and, therefore, for the place on those not favored by the sun parts he can not fear.
South of Burgundy, a small amount of Aligote can be found in the Rhone Valley, in the company of Chardonnay in the composition of the light fruit wine châtillon-EN-Diois, (Chatillon-en-Diois)
As for growing conditions, the aliquot not be so fastidious as many other varieties. He is able to give a subtle wine on the chalky soils of Burgundy, but it is a viable and more sandy – like Ron, for example.
It is noteworthy that his stamina and vitality aliquot deserved fame “useful” and “reliable”, and not “magical” and “amazing”. Connoisseurs and wine producers usually excite tough candidates like Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo – requiring great skill to master, but with the potential of outstanding results.
Despite its prominence as a French resident, Aligote larger cultivated in other regions, particularly in Eastern Europe, Ukraine, Moldova, and Russia. Thousands of hectares planted his vines in Bulgaria and Romania, where it is surprisingly popular. The area of plantations is several times more in his native France.
In Russia is widely used in the production of sparkling wines and varietal wines, a quiet black sea (Gelendzhik, Krasnodar Krai)
Wine from Aligote
From aliquot obtained light dry wine. The bouquet is floral with herbal notes. The acidity is high. It is often included in blends, especially in California (wines for local consumption) and Russia. Able to give structure and to enrich the fragrance blends from lackluster grades.
In France it is drunk young, it is believed that this wine does not benefit from long aging.
There are references about some Aligote Vert and even red Rouge Aligote, but the data are too few to confidently say that we are not talking about the alternative names of the other varieties, unrelated to the aliquot (see for example the mess with the name Riesling)
