Pomerol (Pomerol) FR. Pomerol – status appellation red wines of Bordeaux (southwest France) that is physically and historically stands apart from other Bordeaux appellations. He does not fit the generally accepted ideas about wine in the Bordeaux region as a wealthy region with granite foundations of the classified Chateau. All this is not about Pomerol. Nevertheless, he managed to win a place among the most respected wine regions of the world.
Pomerol in no formal system of wine classification, those of Graves, Medoc, Sauternes and Saint-Emilion. Fame and glory to this region came relatively recently and relatively quickly: in the middle of the last century, about him almost no one knew, and today wine such as Petrus and Le Pen afford the price tags that are comparable with the long-honored giants of the Medoc region.
Pomerol is located to the East of Bordeaux, near Saint Emilion, in Libourne region (Libournais), called from Libourne (Libourne).
The local landscape is remarkable that in it there is absolutely nothing remarkable.
Many appellations are named for the village or town within their boundaries, Pomerol in this hub is not. It is a solid piece of land of 800 hectares with a vertical drop of just 20 metres.
On the southern and Western parts of the appellation the soil is more sandy, compared to slightly heavier soils in the East, where there is clay content. East – higher – edge pomarola borders on Saint-Emilion. In this part produced the best wines of the appellation. There are some Chateau like Petrus (Petrus), Le Pen (Le Pin) and Lafleur (Lafleur).
Merlot is the main variety in Pomerol. He plays a decisive role in the character of the local wines: a rich, soft and approachable at a young age.
Cabernet franc is the second most important ingredient. He brings to the wine structure and bright speziavia notes of the bouquet.
Also allowed, but are limited to: Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec
On the world market there is great demand for wine in this style, and Pomerol enjoyed sustained popularity as more and has a decent capacity for aging.
The predominance of Merlot, however, is a risk factor for pomarola and wines of Saint-Emilion. This variety is an early flowering period and so poorly protected from spring frosts. For example, in 1991, they destroyed much of the harvest in Pomerol. But this has only led to higher prices for local wine, as demand steadily outstrips supply.
Place on the world wine market for pomarola guaranteed for the near future, as interest in prestige wines is only growing, and the production of these wines is very limited.
