“Flagship” class

There are so-called “flagship class”. This grape variety, which is the most successful in the country monosortovye wine. Accordingly, those class labels which should be selected on the shelf with the wine of the country “ceteris paribus” meaning that if you have not yet decided their preferences.

The term is applied to countries in the New world and the individual regions of the old.

Here are a few examples of the flagship varieties for you to watch:

  • Chile red: Carmenere (Carménère)
  • Argentina – red: Malbec (Malbec); white: torrontes (Torrontes)
  • Australia – red: Shiraz (Shiraz, Syrah)
  • California red: Zinfandel (Zinfandel), Merlot (Merlot)
  • South Africa red: Pinotage (Pinotage); white: Chenin Blanc (Chenin Blanc)
  • New Zealand red: Pinot Noir (Pinot noir); white: Sauvignon Blanc (Sauvignon blanc)
  • Uruguay red: tannat (Tannat)
  • Montenegro red: Vranac (Vranac)
