Barbaresco

Barbaresco is one of the outstanding wines of the Piedmont region in Northwest Italy. Before he was called Nebbiolo di Barbaresco – named varieties from which it is made and communes where this is going. This wine, while still sweet, the Austrian General Melas in 1799, celebrating the victory over the French.

Dry – as we know it today – this wine was only in the mid-19th century.

In 1933 Barbaresco wine zone was officially demarcated in 1966 appeared the corresponding category of DOC, and in 1980 she was promoted to the prestigious DOCG status.

Three sub-zones of Barbaresco located in the Langhe along the Tanaro river in the communes of Barbaresco, Neive (Neive) and Treiso (Treiso). Previously, they were treated more San Rocco Seno D’elvio (San Rocco Seno d’elvio), which is now considered to be part of Alba.

Differences from Barolo

Like his famous countryman Barolo, Barbaresco is made entirely of Nebbiolo. But wine is different. Why?

From the Barbaresco zone is warmer and drier, and berries ripen for him before, have a mild flavor and as a result, the wine they can drink at a younger age. This does not mean that Barbaresco is not capable of aging: acidity and tannins in it too, enough for wine with potential. But it initially turns softer and “fructova”.

The main difference between Barolo from Barbaresco are more recent soft tannins that make it more friendly when used at a young age.

Barbaresco features a rich spicy bouquet and a delicate sweetness in the aroma. It is considered more elegant of the two famous wines of the region.
The total area of vineyards in the Barbaresco zones is smaller than that of Barolo: its annual production is modest about 35%. Therefore, on the shelves outside of Italy it less. At the same time, the style of these wines is more even than in the more extensive zone of Barolo.

Requirements for wine Barbaresco

The wine, labeled as Barbaresco DOCG must contain at least 12.5% alcohol and spend at least a year in oak barrels and then at least another year in the bottle before going on sale.

Barbaresco Riserva means aged for at least 4 years, of which at least one year in barrel.

In fact, these wines are intended to drink at the age of 5 years.
