Umbria

Umbria (Umbria), a scenic region in Central Italy, with hills covered with lush greenery and mustasimi at their peaks, villages and historic towns. Latest from the most famous Orvieto (Orvieto) and Assisi (Assisi).

Umbria is located in the heart of the Peninsula and is surrounded by areas of Tuscany, Marche and Lazio. This is the only Italian region without access to the sea or to the borders of another state.

As Marche and Lazio, Umbria is better known for its white wines. Despite the stylistic changes, Orvieto DOC, which is based on the Trebbiano variety, remains the largest appellation of the region. It accounts for more than 10% of the total wine production in Umbria. The wine Orvieto is represented by all degrees of sweetness from dry (secco) to sweet (amabile) and sweet (dolce).

Trebbiano Umbria is also found under the name procanico (Procanico). It is believed that in fact, it’s his clone with smaller bunches, are able to give more quality wines.

The second most important white grape variety in Umbria – Grechetto (Grechetto). He plays a supporting role in the wines of Orvieto and is involved in white blends other appellations of the region. At the same time, most of them have the right to pour Grechetto pure, including wine Colli Martani DOC and Amelia DOC.

Despite the fame of the white wine of the region, two of the most prestigious DOCG appellation Umbria red.

Red autochthonous of Umbria – Sagrantino (Sagrantino) – became famous in the wines of Montefalco (Montefalco), demonstrating the power and depth. Their best products from manufacturers such as Paolo Bea and Arnaldo Caprai can compete with the best Italian Reds. It is not surprising that in 1992 the blame Sagrantino di Montefalco was granted DOCG status.

The obvious way is gaining popularity and Sangiovese, already leader in the area planted among all varieties in Umbria. They planted approximately 22% of the vineyards.

Sangiovese is the key in the second DOCG of the region – Torgiano Rosso Riserva (Torgiano Rosso Riserva). At least Reds (not riserva) and white wines from the same area have only the status of DOC.

There are 11 zones DOC.

And 6 IGT areas:

  • Regional Umbria IGT
  • Allerona
  • Bettona
  • Cannara
  • Narni
  • Spello
  • In terms of production Umbria ranks about 15th place among 20 wine regions of Italy. Its 700 million liters per year – is less than a third of wine production in Tuscany.

As of 2010 only around 17% of the total mass was the fault of the status DOC. However, since the quality of local wines is obviously increased, largely due to the engagement of consultants-oenologists that, in General, has become the norm in Italy recently.

These efforts have yielded the most significant result in wines based on Sangiovese. The consequence of this practice was the increased use of international varieties: red-Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and white Chardonnay. Wineries of Umbria make oak-aged blend of Chardonnay, Grechetto with.

This new generation of wines is a growing interest of consumers both within the country and abroad. To some extent this is understandable and a more attractive price compared to comparable wines of the same Tuscany.

The climate of Umbria is similar to Tuscan: cold rainy winter and dry summer months with lots of sunshine. The exception is the vicinity of Perugia (Perugia), where temperature fluctuations are smoothed out by the waters of lake Trasimeno (Trasimeno), the fourth largest in Italy.

Most of the vineyards of Umbria located on the terraces of the local hills. This is reflected in the name of a number of appellations, which is the word colli which means hills.
