Meursault (Meursault) is a large commune in the Burgundy sub-region of côte de Beaune.
White wines Meursault valued not less than neighboring Puligny-Montrachet, despite the fact that there is not a single Grand CRU vineyard. Feature Meursault just that his fame brought excellent wines premiers CRUs and even the General utility of the appellation. The most famous of them come from the southern part of the commune – from the vineyards of charm (Charmes), Perrer (Perrieres) and Zhenevrier (Genevrieres).
In addition to the official sites of Premier Cru commune known with a number of respected leagues di, whose names are usually used on the label. Leagues di do not have a separate status premiers CRUs, but have proven terroir potential. Transition leagues di as an official Premier Cru is quite possible, as well as the disqualification of some CRUs: a revision of the classification was to happen more often, last time Meursault passed it in 2001.
The wine Meursault is almost entirely devoted to white wines from Chardonnay. Less than 5% of the vines in the local vineyards are reserved for Pinot Noir for red wine. In fact, red wines with a small piece of the northernmost part of the municipality even go under the appellation of its neighbour to the North, Volnay. This parcel group produces its sparkling wine under the name of Volnay Santenots, with white from here go under the label Meursault Santenots Blancs, Santenots du Milieu and Les Plures.
Wine from Meursault is one of the most rich and full-bodied white Burgundy. The bouquet is often referred to butter, almonds and roasted hazelnuts, all on a background of clean citrus and mineral tones live.
At the same time, these wines are distinctly geological differences between the vineyards of the commune is the terroir.
Terroirs of Meursault is rich in limestone slope areas of the côte d’or, which covers an area at the entrance to the valley of Saint-Romain – where the landscape of the Golden Slope begins to “walk”, leading to differences in exposure of the vineyards. And this is one of the factors determining the differences in the style of the wines of Meursault.
The extent of the territory of the commune is just over 5 km from North to South. Very little, but still more than neighboring Puligny-Montrachet, which is barely 2 km away. On such a small area is home to numerous appellations with hundreds of vineyards belonging to countless families. All this mosaic resulted in a very complicated system of marking Burgundy labels.
