Margaux (Margaux) – the so-called communal appellation within the boundaries of the appellation O-médoc (Haut Médoc i.e. the Upper Medoc) in the Bordeaux region.
Margaux is a village at the head of which stands Chateau Margaux (Château Margaux), produces wines premiers Grand CRU (Premier Grand Cru). But today, this appellation covers five villages (or communes):
- In Fact, Margo (Margaux)
- Cantenac (Cantenac)
- Arsac (Arsac)
- Lebard (Labarde)
- Sussan (Soussans)
The fact that Margo is the only appellation, whose name coincides with a woman’s name, perhaps, after all, is not just a coincidence. One has only to taste the typical wine, born on the terroir of Margaux, to feel the subtle connection of this appellation to his name.
The wine AOC Margaux defined as “feminine” not in the meaning light or weak: they do not have tannic power inherent in the classic Polecam and St estevam. The most typical of them are rounded to the combination of very great complexity.
Margaux wines have an excellent capacity for storage, but they also are flexible, delicate and very elegant fruit aromas. They are an example of generous and gentle tannic wines, which is placed in a cellar for a long time.
Margo – first of the most famous appellations of Bordeaux, found on the road leading from the city of Bordeaux. Its pebbly soil, is common to all the best vineyards of the Medoc, lies on the right hand. It pebbles provide good drainage vineyards, and wines combine stunning multifaceted bouquet, aroma and relatively light body, so characteristic of the best Bordeaux wines.
Its originality wine Margaux owe to many factors, including human. Margo growers are paying less attention to Cabernet Sauvignon than in the other great communal appellations of the médoc. Planting Merlot does not dominate here, but this variety is becoming increasingly important.
For Margo characteristic is the thinnest in the médoc soil layer. Part of the nutrients it has little to offer the vine, however, perfectly absorbs water. The result is a wine early in its life is relatively mild, although in bad years sometimes too watery. But Margaux made in good years, is a vivid demonstration of all advantages of gravel: delicate, sweet, memorable aroma put it on par with the best of the red wines.
Most reach these heights Chateau Margaux and Chateau Palmer.
In the heart of the appellation, in the communes of Margaux and Cantenac plateau with an area of 6 by 2 km with a white gravelly soil, cut by erosion into hills. That is where most of the 18 Grand CRU Classe of the appellation Margaux.
Margo only the second largest appellation in the Medoc (first — St-Estephe), but here is the most classified vineyards.
The most famous château of the appellation Margaux:
- Margaux (Margaux) 1er Gran Cru

- Rauzan-Segla (Rauzan-Segla) 2 Grand Cru

- Cantenac-Brown (Cantenac-Brown) 3 Grand Cru
- Palmer (Palmer) 3 Grand Cru

Just in Margaux, there are 22 classified Chateau, i.e. has the status of a Grand Cru from 1 (Premiers CRU) to 5 (Sankham Grand CRU).
There are two types of wine. Fruit from excellent vineyards located around the village of Margaux, create the most “beautiful” red wine of Bordeaux. The aroma of the good wines such as Margaux, Palmer or Ferriere is simply stunning. Of course, this is mainly blackcurrant flavor, but really it is something more. The feeling that Christian Dior sprayed the barrels of the most precious perfumes, and then the wine poured into them Cassis. Sounds unlikely, but the flavor is really amazing.
Margaux wines are often very dry and hard to start, but if you wait for their maturity, then the feeling will be unforgettable.
In Margaux, and his “companions,” do considered to be the most elegant and aromatic wines of the Medoc. It was, according to historians, in the past, so is the case now. Here more than anywhere else of vineyards classified as second and third CRU.
BUT:
Consumers should be wary of inscription Margo on the label and remember that even being home to the greatest wines, Margaux remains the most uneven of the best appellations. Here is a set of Chateau that do not reach the General level, and the wines made there are still too many…
The wine Margaux elegance, is to serve exquisite dishes, such as Chateaubriand, duck, young partridge or steak-Bordeaux
Chateau Margaux

Chateau Margaux is the greatest of all Chateau Bordeaux: the wines, under the General appellation “Margaux” – usually more primitive than exactly Chateau Margaux – doing in different parts of the commune.
Chateau Margaux is fluent not only in the Medoc vineyard, the first class (Premier Grand Cru), but a beautiful mansion in the classical style.
For a time, it Chateau was so-so, but beginning in 1978 the new owners, the family Mentzelopoulos (Mentzelopoulos), revived the estate and revived the wine production.
Greek-born Andre Mentzelopoulos he made his fortune in the grain trade in India, Pakistan and the far East. On arriving in France in 1958м, he acquired a small chain of grocery stores, “grow” it in a solid network of supermarkets of 1600 outlets. In 1977, he bought the estate of Margo’s family Ginestet (Janet) and began to seriously invest in the development of running a winery, hoping for a quick return on investment (planted new vines, he resumed the practice of producing “second wine”, built a new underground cellar has purchased new oak barrels). Sam Andre died at 1980m – long before his efforts bear tangible fruit.
Noteworthy white wine of this Chateau, aged in oak barrels Pavillon Blanc de Chateau Margaux, from the vineyard in the Western part. Although the PDO had just Bordeaux.
Label Of Chateau Margaux
Apart from some minor changes, label château Margaux has remained virtually unchanged since the late 19th century. Perhaps the fact that her simple, elegant style is so accurately reflects the character of a wine that simply had no reason to change anything, except for a few forced legal issues.

Terroir – now the PDO – Chateau that might tell more about wine?
Classification since 1855.
The label reflects the history, including the history of the great achievements of Bordeaux.
Maturation. Potential.
The manufacturer believes that his wines have exceptional potential for development, and Mature château Margaux (after 15-20 years of exposure) is much more interesting of the young, carefully noticing that “most of the wines of the Chateau have a delicious taste at a young age and, perhaps, to drink them is when you really want to”
